As the festive greetings wishing you a "Merry Christmas" and "joy to the world" commence I among others am starting to feel the pressure of the "Happiest season of all". Don't get me wrong I love Christmas, every year I thoroughly enjoy spending the holidays with my family and friends, eating far too much, and playing games. However, the expectation of having a "Happy Christmas" is sometimes too much. Christmas like any other time of year brings about both happiness and sadness, both love and loss, and both gratefulness and anxiety. Perhaps this is too Scrooge-like for some, but if you just so happen to be feeling the same way here are my 5 tips for having a somewhat Merrier Christmas:
Take the Pressure off
Christmas can sometimes come with a lot of pressure, whether that be gift-giving, hosting guests, or making everything magical for others. Taking the pressure off means allowing yourself to embrace imperfections, knowing that the essence of the holiday lies in togetherness and joy rather than achieving perfection in every aspect. Why not try going for a festive walk, hosting a movie marathon or a spontaneous picnic with all your favourite snacks? Embrace whatever brings you joy!
2. Put Yourself First
In the hustle and bustle of everything, don't forget to take care of yourself. Prioritise your well-being by setting boundaries, taking breaks when needed, and engaging in activities that recharge you. Whether it's reading, listening to music, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing a hobby, these moments of self-care are like recharging your batteries, allowing you to bring your best self to the celebrations. Remember a merrier Chrsitmas starts with a happier you.
3. Speak to Others
Communication is key, especially during the holiday season. Talk to your loved ones about your expectations, concerns, and ideas. Open and honest conversations can lead to a better understanding of each other's desires and can help in planning enjoyable festivities for everyone involved. This sharing promotes a sense of togetherness and unity, making the celebrations more fulfilling and meorable for everyone involved.
4. Change Your Tradition
While traditions are wonderful, sometimes mixing things up can add a spark of excitement and freshness to the holiday season. Consider introducing new activities, altering existing traditions to accommodate changing circumstances, or simply infusing new joy into the celebrations.
5. Practice Gratitude
Expressing gratitude during the holiday season can significantly impact your mindset. Taking time each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for—whether it's the love of family and friends, a warm home, or even small everyday joys—can help you appreciate the season more deeply and find joy in the simple things.
